Wishpot and Tiny Prints Giveaway- Share the inspiration behind the name

Win a $50 Gift Certificate to Tiny Prints - Stylish birth announcements, baby shower invitations, holiday photo cards and more! Share the inspiration behind the name.

Are you named after a parent, famous person, historical character, movie icon, favorite relative, family friend, book character, or sports player? If so, tell us your story!

One of my good friends recently had a baby girl and this is her baby’s name inspiration story. I warn you, it is a bit of a tear jerker.

Vaunya’s story

“A couple of days before the delivery I saw this name in a Russian name book.  Vaunya is a Russian equivalent for Ivan.  And Ivan is a version of John.  My brother who we lost 10 years ago, and whose 30th birthday just passed, was Jon.  It was a great way of tying my brother into our daughter.”

Now it’s your turn! And don’t worry–it doesn’t need to be that sentimental. My mom never misses a minute to let me know that if I had been a boy she would have named me Elvis. Luckily, the Danielle Steel book she was reading provided her with my name instead.

Share the inspiration behind the name and win a $50 Gift Certificate from Tiny Prints! 2. My mom and dad thought I was going to be a boy. The sonogram had said so and she just had a “feeling.” They had a name picked out…Steve….after Stevie Nicks. They were huge fans. When I was born a girl (imagine the shock), they had no idea what to do. A day later (I was still nameless), my mom was going through her wallet and found a note she wrote when she was 16. The name she wanted to give her hypothetical daughter. “Stephanie” Realizing that “Stephanie” could still be shortened to “Stevie,” they knew it was the right fit and that’s how I got my name. However, by the time I could talk, I refused to answer to “Stevie,” informing anyone who called me “Stevie” that it was a boy’s name.

  3. Hahaha! I love this: Elvis, Danielle Steele books- so amazing! I’m not a fan of my name but the sentiment behind it means so much that I can’t help but have a few positive feelings about it.

Over 30 years ago when my parents were living in Belgium, working & saving up for plane tickets to the United States, there was a woman named “Nadine” that helped them out & took them in. Years later, when they had made it to the US & pregnant with me, they felt the best way to repay their dear friend was to name me after her.

On a side note, I love this giveaway. I’ll definitely have to do a blog post about it!

  4. when my mom was pregnant with me there were 3 older sister and 2 older brothers all wondering what the sex of the new baby would be. They all decided to nick name the baby Sam until it was born. My mom would say things like, “oh, Sam’s kicking again!” When I was born and turned out to be a girl my parents decided to name me after both of my gradmothers Susannah (my dad’s mom) and Marguerite (my mom’s mom) but still called me Sam. They changed the spelling as not to be confused with boys or Samantha’s.

  5. I was named Devon after a Soap Opera character! Must be why I was so in to General Hospital when I was only 7 or 8. ;)

  6. I was named after an actress -Adrienne Barbeau.

But my son’s name is Aaron. I had a few criteria on this. I wanted his name to be a “strong ‘A’ name”. We went through tons of names, even ones that didn’t start with an ‘A’ to come up with something that was hard to make fun of or rhyme with and that couldn’t be shortened to a lame nickname. Aaron was it! :) We love it.

  7. I became a fan of Tiny Prints on FB!

  8. My parents wanted to honor my grandfather, but didn’t want to name me Rollin Chester, so instead they settled for matching the initials and I became Ross Cameron. I don’t think I would have minded Rollin.

  9. My name is Dianne…BUT on my original birth certificate (which gratefully was never filed) my name was supposed to be Criminilda. I wish I were joking.

I was my mom’s 2nd girl, and I bordering on 9lbs. My mom is a small 4′9 woman who at the time of my conception couldn’t have weighed more then 98lbs. So I was a more difficult pregnancy and I came out naturally (yes, stitches were necessary) so she wasn’t exactly my fan when I came out. She joked that I was a criminal that was trapped in her body.

But i was cute. And for some odd reason she was taken back to elementary school where she used to sit behind a girl who had ringlets in her hair that my mom used to extend to watch boing back into place. The girl’s name was Crimilda.

    So Criminal…Crimilda….enter my name… Criminilda.

Needless to say, my father was not pleased. He decided I was to be named after his current favorite female songstress. Dionne Warwick. Arguing ensued and somehow the O was changed to an A and I am Dianne.

    Gratefully.

  10. When my mom first got pregnant, she and my dad decided they were going to wait until I was born to find out if I was a boy or girl. As their first child they wanted it to be big surprise! Since they didn’t know what I was going to be, they had to pick both a boy AND a girl name for me. My boy name would have been Ryan Michael, which was chosen after my grandfather. As for a girl name, they both couldn’t settle on one until the day I was born. My dad wanted something short and sporty, dreaming that one day I would grow into a major athlete, and he chose the name Kelly. Now that I’m all grown up, I’m not an athlete by far, but I like the name anyways :)

  11. I changed my cat’s name from Grace to Hippo because, in short, she was about as graceful as a hippo out of water.

She passed a few weeks ago, but I will always fondly remember the sound of her head thumping against legs of my chair.

  12. When we were looking to name our kids we wanted some names that were somewhat unique. With that said all 3 of my kids names have at least 8 letters.

1: Harrison - Love Harrison Ford movies…Also was a family name in the past
2: Delainey - Mom Liked Martina McBride and liked the name she named her daughter.
3: Nathaniel - With the precedent set with the first two, we just couldn’t make it any shorter….Nathaniel is also a family name.

Funny part is that both me and mom have 5 letter names.

  13. I don’t have an incredibly interesting story but I was named after Erin Moran from Happy Days and Joanie loves Chachi. :)

  14. I was named after my Grandmothers:

    Bonnie Marie and Freda Lagean

    I am Lagean Marie.

  15. I follow @tinyprints

  16. I have a very different spelling to my name, Kym, but no interesting story behind it except that my mom didn’t want people to think my name was short for kimberly. However, my daughter has an interesting name with a story behind it. My husband has been a Boston Celtics fan since before the Larry Bird days. So when Boston won the 2008 NBA finals, we joked around naming our daughter after one of the players, Kevin, Paul, etc. However, none of these really worked well for a girl. We then joked around with naming her Boston. I said we could change the o to a y, Bostyn. So that is how we got our daughter’s name, Bostyn!

  17. My husband and I were married on a tiny little island in the NE corner of Florida called Amelia Island. When we got pregnant we did not find out the sex of the baby so we had lots of names on our list, but Amelia was always one of them. Just before I delivered the baby, my husband and I were sharing the list of names with our doctor and nurse. Not long after that, when our daughter was born, the doctor held her up and announced, “Amelia is here!” My husband and I looked at each other and quickly said, “Okay! Yes, yes she is!” It was always a name we loved and now has even more special meaning to us. Her middle name is also my middle name which is an old family name on my mother’s side. My daughter’s name is Amelia Delaney.

  18. I remember the back to the day my name became Sunny.

When I was seven years old my best friend and I were on a camping trip with our parents in California. She and I were sitting on a sunny rock next to a mountain stream talking about our names. We decided we should choose our own names instead of the ones that our parents had given to us. She chose Stormy and I chose Sunny.

My friends have called me Sunny for most of my life.

  21. I was named after my older brother that passed away before I was born.

  22. We named our daughter, Lucy, which means Light. Ironically, she was found to have a cataract in one eye at birth, which blocked the light to her cornea. Luckily, her pediatrician caught it, it was removed and she’s got “perfect” vision years later.

  23. My mom’s middle name is Emily and back then, Emily was an “odd” name so she got made fun of a lot for it. When she found out she was having a girl, she decided to name me Emily… because she loved it, regardless of all the problems it used to cause her!! Turns out Emily became a very popular name shortly after :)

  24. My second baby is 6 months old now, we named here Akasha… All we knew is that we wanted to start the name with the letter ‘A’ - beyond this we had no idea, so we went on a baby name site and picked the first ‘A’ name we liked, it just happened to be Akasha….

The following day I was in Labour and out she came :-) - I guess she must have been waiting for us to decide.

My Son on the other hand is almost 20 months now, and he is called Theo - meaning gift from god, this was a simple decision - when you are told you may not be able to have children, then one day it happens (without warning) - I guess it can really only mean one thing… I am now proud mum to 2 beautiful children.

    And that’s my story….

  25. So there’s absolutely no funny story behind my name, but my daughter that’s a whole other story!
We were struggling to find a name and kind of making fun of people who name their kids after the place they are conceived - Vaile, Montana… - when we started joking and saying that we’d have to name her Santa or Clara. Which is when we realized that we really like the name Clara.
I tell people she’s named after one of my favorite characters in a book, which is partly true, but you’d be surprised at the number of people who guess the truth.

  26. I was named after a coat line at the clothing store The Limited! They had planned on naming me Jordan no matter boy or girl but when my mom was 8 months pregnant they had an ultrasound that showed my face really well. On the car ride home they decided that I wasn’t a Jordan. My mom had loved how the name Cassidy looked on the label on the Limited coat and they decided to use that instead!
