Today’s truly thought-provoking post from Mom Expert Jen of Jenny 867-53oh9 will make you look within yourself and give some perspective as we move through this new year.

I
stink at resolutions. And I’m not the only one in that boat.
We always seem to get revved up just to end up losing focus. We get
frustrated and vow to never make another resolution! Until the next
year. A few years ago I switched my resolution energy over to
inventory management. I call my inventory, Core Feelings.
My
father used to always tell me (in so many words), “Focus on
facts and not feelings.” I like to think my Core Feelings
cover both. What is fact in my life and how do I feel about it?
This
is my Core Feelings for 2009:
I
want peace and quiet. I want to be content no matter what
is going on around me. I want to be sincere.
I
think I have a lot on my plate. I think I snap at the kids too
quickly. I think I try to please people too much.
I
need to love and be loved. I need a good, restful nights sleep. I
need to refill my Synthroid!
I
regret snapping at the boys too much. I regret the times that I
don’t say something because of fear of judgment. I regret
the times that I do
say something when silence would have been so much better.
I
enjoy visiting my mum. I enjoy curling up in bed, with a good book
on a rainy day.
I
dream to live overseas again. I dream that the boys will grow up to
be stable, fun-loving and God-fearing men. I dream of a day
when…..
I hate
what fear does to people. I hate getting in the way of who God
wants me to be.
I
like teasing my husband. I like sit outside, drinking sweet tea
while watching the boys play with the neighborhood kids. I like
having the whole bed to myself…sometimes.
I
dread losing the mommy connection with my sons. I dread passing
down fears and worries to my kids. I dread conversations that
have anything to do with religion, politics and money.
I
need to learn to relax more and worry less. I need to remember
how to laugh at people’s quirks (as well as my own). I
need to spend more time with Hulkman (brother with Down syndrome)…he
makes me laugh.
I love
watching my husband play with the boys. I love listening to him
talk to a crowd. I love when my boys bust out a sincere,
belly-grabbing laugh. I love watching a child have an a-ha
moment during a life’s lesson.
What
are your Core Feelings? I want to encourage you to write them down.
Then read them out loud to yourself. Were you transparent? Did you
hold back? Then do it again. This inventory management sheet is for
you; no one else. Now hang it where you will see it the most. For
me it’s by my shoes…I’m always second-guessing
myself on sole apparel!
It’s
okay to dread, it’s ok to need and it’s definitely ok to
be angry sometimes. But don’t forget the likes, the loves and
the dreams.
After giving our Mom Experts a little break for the holidays…Wishpot Baby is ready to face 2009! Our economy has seen better days and Wishpot’s deal alerts are a great way to keep an eye on deals and bargains.
So now, without further ado… Wishpot Mom Expert Dana of Babyluxe Daily and The Winning Pitch starts off the New Year with her plans for 2009.
—-
Happy New Year Everyone!
Resolution time! How does a mom or Dad make resolutions? Does it have to involve the kids since everything else does? 2009 should be the year of creative and unique resolutions!
No more: work out more, diet, go to church EVERY Sunday, stop speeding, spend more time with the hubby {and less time on the internet}, stop swearing, give up chocolate, listen to the kids more, ask for that raise, blah blah, boring. GOOD ones of course, ones we should all be doing on a daily basis all year every year, but boring. I want everyone to dig deep and find something, let’s say selfish, as their New Year’s Resolution for 2009!
For example, I have a couple:
“My New Year’s Resolution is to NOT go back to work. Let me explain that one a bit so you see where I am coming from, it’s a bunch of little resolutions all in one: I was laid off at the end of November 2008 from my career in the mortgage industry. From that point on I’ve been working to start my own company with a partner that will allow us to both work from home, stop paying nannies, and be with our children everyday but still have a career we love and make a ton of money off of! So basically, I do NOT want to return to the corporate world this year, I want to work from the couch typing away with one hand and changing a diaper with the other!”
“And secondly, I will NOT be cleaning my house this year. Again, explanation: how many waking hours do us moms {and Dads of course} spend cleaning the house? For us neat freaks, it’s hundreds of hours a year wasted on cleaning things that will be dirty again minutes later…so, my house will be dirtier this year. No, I’m not going to stop cleaning my house all together, I would love to but that may have some serious consequences. But, there’s no need to mop the kitchen when the kids are staring at you to play or clean the ceiling fans while hubby is watching your favorite shows alone…nope, not this year, the fans can wait, the floor will still be dirty after playtime is over.”
What are your fun and different resolutions this year? We would love to hear them!
Happy New Year again everyone!

I get downright
giddy when I discover a unique gift that is made by a mom or sold by
a mom-owned business. As a work at home mom, I know how hard moms
work to forge a living. I know just how smart and creative and clever
we are and have to be to make a living. I know any mom-made gift
features something you won’t find at a sales rack at a major
chain store: a mom’s love and creativity.
I have to confess, I
still do my share of holiday shopping at the malls, Wal-Marts and
Targets. But whenever possible, I love to buy mom-made gifts and,
preferably, by them directly from the mom who made them.
What constantly
amazes me is just how many killer, beautiful, creative and unique
gifts you can find. Best of all, many times these gifts are
reasonably priced or even cheaper than gifts you might find at the
mall. For example, I have found countless mom-made items at Etsy in
the $20 and under or even $10 and under category.
One of my favorites
is the Global
Goodie line of t-shirts and onesies. For $15, buy that
little foodie in training a super cute food/kid related shirt. The
shirts take popular haute cuisines and translate them into something
a child will enjoy. Here is the Escargot:

And how funky-cute
is this Circle
of Family necklace from the Design
by Simag Etsy shop? It costs $49 and is customized
with the names of a mom’s children. This is definitely on my
wish list this year!

I personally have a
kindergartener who is just now learning to write properly. She loves
writing her name, and I’m sure she would dig “signing”
things with this clever mom-made creation: the signature
stamp from Little
Stamp.

You can even find
mom-made versions of the popular children’s holiday outfit.
This Holiday
Candy Stripe customized shirt from Tote
and Tee is just adorable, and you can buy it for
babies up to size 12, for girls or boys, and with the child’s
initial in upper or lower case. Sweet:

You can see some of
my other favorite mom-made holiday gifts on my Wishpot Cool
Mom-Made Gifts list (and I’ll keep adding
throughout the season as I make cool discoveries).

Today Wishpot Mom Expert Dana of Babyluxe Daily and The Winning Pitch blog tells us about her favorite cold weather meals and treats and even includes a recipe for us to try! Thanks Dana!

I woke up this morning
to frost on my car; mind you I’m in the South. Just means
winter is just around the corner and my grill is going to get less
and less use until Spring. So, time to get creative in the kitchen
to keep the family warm and toasty in their tummies at meal time!
Anyone else have a hard
to please children when it comes to meals? Or should I say
dinner…breakfast and lunch seem to be easy, it’s getting
the kids to eat pork and veggies, that’s the problem. Here
are some fun, easy, warm and filling, kid-friendly meals and treats
that my kids seem to cobble up!
For Breakfast, fresh
out of the oven zucchini bread! If they like banana bread, they will
love zucchini bread! My recipe is family “owned” and all
in my head but here’s one that is easy, the kids can help, and
it will be oh so yummy on those cold mornings!
2 c. sugar
1 c.
oil
3 eggs
3 c. flour
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1
tsp. cinnamon (add to taste)
2 c. grated fresh zucchini
1 c.
nuts
2 tsp. Vanilla
{Add some chocolate
chips for an extra treat and don’t forget your “substitutes”
for a healthier recipe.}

For the treat part of
it, nothing goes over better in my house than Hot Chocolate and
Smores! I should say, WARM Chocolate since I only heat the water
half way to hot so even the 2 year old can enjoy some without burning
his mouth. Plus, we’ve had this fun hot chocolate maker for
years that is easy for the kids to use and makes a nice foamy drink!
And, the more marshmallows the better!

I don’t think I
need to explain Smores to you do I?? But how do you make them in
doors since most of us in the suburbs do not have outdoor fireplaces
or free standing bonfires. We do it the simple way with the help of
our trusty microwave! Just microwave the marshmallow and the piece
of chocolate for a short amount of time {only a few seconds}, throw
on the cracker and you are good to go! For the kids, it’s the
best in the world to them! {Little do they know that a burnt
marshmallow on an open flame is so much better!}
For a meal, how about
Chili? Now most kids can not eat Chili, too spicy. All you have to
do is tone down the kick and let the kids get creative with it! I
add very little chili powder and a ton more meat and beans to make it
less saucy. Peppers and onions are cut up so extremely small the
kids do not even know they are there! {For a bit of a healthy spin
on it, I’ve also pureed spinach and/or squash and thrown it
in}. Now for the fun part for the kids. Set all the condiments out
and let them decide what goes on top, similar to taco night! Cheddar
cheese {or whatever cheese they like best}, sour cream, chives, my
kids favorite…bacon bits, soup crackers, whatever you can
think of or they can think of. My littlest one does not eat the
chili with a spoon; he’ll dip Wheat Thins or Italian bread in
it. Fine with me!
Now is the best time to
get the kids involved in cooking! They will be indoors more and more
over the coming months and they need outlets to be creative yet have
fun, and making a mess in the kitchen and making meals together will
start traditions and make memories through the holidays and chilly
months! {My six year old made us a pizza the other night, by
himself! And not the frozen kind! Yep, I was beaming!}
Now that Halloween is over the "holiday" season officially begins. And in the mommy blogger world you know what that means?

Today Wishpot Mom Expert Dana of Babyluxe Daily and The Winning Pitch blog talks about how to prepare for fall parties, including Halloween, at your child’s school.
—–
One week until the big
day, Halloween! Which also means one week until your child’s
school party. Chances are, now a days, that it is no longer a
Halloween party but more of a Fall Festival, or “Fall Treat
Day” as our school calls it. No to wearing costumes, no to
bringing in homemade baked goods, and no to parents being there (that
was a first for me but we’re not allowed this year). Okay, not
very exciting for my little 1st grader! I’m hoping
your school has a much better, more exciting approach to next Friday
and making it fun for the kids while they are in school. Here’s
some daycare, pre-school and elementary school “friendly”
ideas to make parents and teachers happy!
Steer clear of the
candy! Chances are those children will be getting a TON of candy
through trick or treating that night so for the party at school
during the day, stick with more healthy treats. Fruit cups, fruit
snacks, crackers, (no cheese, no peanut butter…allergies),
apple slices (maybe with caramel dipping sauce), etc…I’m
not saying bring in some broccoli and carrots, but no candy bars
please! And make sure you have the correct head count and bring
enough, even more, for everyone (include the teacher and teacher’s
assistant too).
Although no costumes
are allowed at most schools, church schools, daycares, and
pre-school, I’m sure everyone is allowed to show a little
Halloween sprit! Just a little pumpkin shirt goes a long way! OR,
for the younger ones, some pumpkin BabyLegs. These are so cute and
festive! Oh, and my oldest son will be wearing the Fire BabyLegs on
his arms under a tee instead of a costume at school. He still gets
to “dress-up” in his mind without breaking any rules.

If you decide to do
“favors” or gift bags for the kids, which was my favorite
pick when I was allowed to bring them (pre-k and daycare), again
stick with none-candy items. Educational items go over well with the
parents and teachers, and most of the time the kids, so keep it
exciting for them! Pencils and coloring books are great sure, but
kids have too many of those! Go to your local dollar store or buy
items right before the party when chances are they will be on sale,
try pumpkin or leaf cookie cutters, festive small flashlights for
them that evening, stickers and sticker books, activity books (not
just coloring books), etc… And remember, try not to pick out
ghost items, skeleton items, things of that nature, as of course the
kids like them at this age (especially the boys), the whole point of
the “Fall” theme vs. the Halloween theme is to take the
scary stuff out!
And finally,
decorations or activities. Bring paper products with leaves or
pumpkins, or shaped like leaves or pumpkins. Again, every little
detail makes it more special, right down to the plates they will put
their store bought cupcake on.

My favorite craft for school age kids, you can find anywhere, and
its mess free and portable, Foamies. Every season and holiday you
will see these in Michaels, Target, everywhere. Grab some, cheap,
for lots of sticking fun! They come in all different types, and they
will stick to pretty much anything! Buy some inexpensive pumpkin
buckets for trick or treating and have the students stick Foamies all
over their bucket. You can get ABC Foamies, Fall Foamies, Halloween
Foamies, and different educational ones. It’s fun for the
kids, easy clean-up for the adults!

This week, Wishpot Mom Expert Tara gives us some great tips for Halloween decor. It’s about that time to get in the Halloween spirit for all those trick or treaters come knocking at our door next week! Also, on behalf of the entire Wishpot team I want to wish Tara’s daughter Emma, who has her first birthday today, a very Happy Birthday!

—–
One of
my favorite things as a kid was my mom decorating for every holiday and
season. I would walk in from school and it would feel like fall, or
Halloween or whatever holiday was around the corner. Eventually as I
got older and moved out my home I always wondered where the magic of
the holidays had gone too. I came to realize just how much of an impact
decorating had on me. I now look forward to put the magic into the
holidays for my daughter as my mom did for me.
This
time of year though can be pretty hard on family budgets with Halloween
costumes, fall/winter wardrobes to get for the kids, and Christmas is
right around the corner. Add candy buying and pumpkin carving it can be
hard to find extra money for decorations. Plus my husband and I are
still creating a home together and don’t have a lot of holiday
decorations yet.
Decorating
on a budget doesn’t have to be hard though. Thinking about what you are
buying and look for deals. If you are starting from scratch like me key
items are more important. Look for focal points in your home and think
about what your guest sees in your house. Placing decorations in key
areas will give off a great holiday feeling without breaking your
budgets. Think about the size of the rooms you are adding decorations
too. My kitchen is small so dish towels hanging from my oven were just
enough.
If
you are looking to add to your decorations go through what you have to
make sure you don’t double buy and check to see if anything needs to be
replaced. Look for something that can roll over into Thanksgiving too.
Guards and mini pumpkins are fun and can be used apart of center
pieces.
Think
about areas you don’t spend a lot of time in but use all the time. Like
a bathroom or a staircase. Get a fun hand towel for the bathroom and a
garland for the staircase. Warming up those areas adds a little punch
to your decorating. Don’t forget some holiday basics like wreaths or
door signs, pumpkins on the walk way (un-carved ones can work for
Thanksgiving too), themed table clothes, and a candy bowl.

Include
your kids in your decorating. Get some fun Halloween stickers and break
out the markers! You can make a ghost out of old socks by gluing on
buttons, stuffing it with paper towels and tie a string round the
middle. Hanging it their room or around a door knob. Creating wreaths
for their room doors but cutting out a circle from paper and putting
foam stickers on it. You can make placemats out of construction paper
and just have them draw their favorite scene. Put them on the fridge
until you use them for Halloween dinner.
Halloween is a fun time of year so have fun with your decorating!

Today Wishpot Mom Expert Dana of Babyluxe Daily and The Winning Pitch blog talks about how to shop for infants as we approach the official start of the holiday season.
—
Yes, I’m already in the Christmas
mind set, I’ve been shopping for weeks already. I’m one of
those people; who has to be done with her shopping before the mad rush!
Christmas morning should be
lots of fun in our house this year, with a 7 yr. old, a 2 ½ yr old,
and a 6 month old. We’ll have one at every stage of excitement!
I’m running into a wall with
what to buy the littlest one this year though. Since he has every
hand me down toy and piece of clothing know to man, it’s hard to decide
what to buy him of his own.
So, I’m sharing some great
“First Christmas Gifts” with you today and my ideas of what might
be the must have infant gifts of the season…even though it’s a bit
early to tell. (I was inspired to write this post today due to
the FUN Live contest last night on http://www.poshparentnetwork.com/)
The first ornament is a must!
And there are a billion out there so it’s just a matter of style preference
or theme. We always do the personalized ones, more memorable and
special, and trust me, once you put more kids into the mix, after 11
months in storage, you forget whose ornaments are whose if not labeled
or personalized.
Next I would say some sort
of a handmade quilt (by grandma or mommy preferably), or monogrammed
blanket, something along those lines. A security blanket to grow
with the baby; for him to treasure forever. We already have several
that Aidan received around birth so that is not on my list this year,
but for anyone who does not have one, it’s a wonderful first gift.
These are my favorites (besides homemade ones!). www.organicblankees.com
And the one thing on my list
this year, and will be on his list every year to come just like my other
boys, the beginning of his first library. With my oldest we started
with the “How Does a Dinosaur…” books. Every year he gets
the newest one, and even at 7 he still loves them! My middle child’s
first library collection is the “My First Winnie the Pooh” books.
There are tons of them and he gets a couple new ones each year.
Aidan’s will be the start of the “David” books by David Shannon.
We have one now that is so simple and start forward learning for the
boys, I love it!
Finally, for baby’s first
Christmas toy, something of his own that is not a hand-me-down; you
can never go wrong with LeapFrog! We have almost everything they
offer, but each year we discover something new! Aidan will enjoy
his “Little Leaps Grow-with-me Learning System” for sure!!
Happy EARLY shopping!
