Shoulder Pads - Fashion’s 80’s Revival! No comments yet

In the ’80s shoulder pads were used with almost everything in your wardrobe, from jackets and blazers to evening dresses and casual tops. Some time later high shoulders were successfully forgotten and outdated, though lately they have reappeared in recent runways with many famous designers showing their lines that consisted of military-styled jackets and dresses with shoulder pads.

High shoulders symbolize authority and aggressiveness though at the same time they make the silhouette look slimmer. But high shoulders are not flattering for everyone. Shoulder pads can be tremendously risky if worn with wrong styles.

Many fashion experts today believe that a jacket or dress with shoulder pads is an absolute must-have for this season!

What are your thoughts? Are shoulder pads in or out?

All major retailers such as Nordstrom and Macy’s have jumped on this boot bandwagon, and with good reason! Over-the-knee boots are great to wear over jeans, leggings or tights. They can give that extra something to any regular outfit and are a killer way to make a statement!

Re-Post: Bonne Vie - The Rebirth of: The Hat No comments yet

Okay, you guys, can we talk hats for just a moment?  Recently, I went to one of Mister’s orchestra concerts and I decided that it was the perfect time to put on a hat.  I got a few funny looks and a lot of compliments for throwing on a cute wool cloche, and realized that I was the only one there in a hat.  I wondered – what happened to hats?  Winter is the perfect time for it.

There have been a few hat posts recently, including this gem from Michelle of Wicked Whimsy (though the post is actually on Dramatis Personae), and this fun piece at  Chinashop, in which Gala says, “Revise… hats”.   I’m not going to go over all the values of hats – What I have here is a list of ‘ze hats I loooove!  OH JOY!

This first little number is from Modcloth, and it’s perfect for an afternoon at the museum, or a night out on the town:

Put a vintage spin on it with something like this velvet WAC cap by BoringSydney on Etsy:

I’m sure I’ve featured this Etsy seller before – but her hats are so cute and affordable for handmade wool cloches:

And if you’re looking for something a little fancier, these hats by Yellowfield 7 are DIVINE:

What would I wear these hats with?  A little flounce skirt and a cute sweater, tucked in; my Spun boatneck, boots and leggings; a Deco Modiste A-line pocket skirt, a button shirt, and a cardigan over top; skinnies, a little blazer and some wedges… there are so many possibilities.  As Michelle said in her post on Dramatis Personae:

How to wear: Personally, I think these hats look best with a clean, sharp silhouette. A tailored pair of pants, some brogues, a vest over a solid-color top & a top hat would make a great menswear inspired outfit; or you could wear an a-line skirt or full skirt with a fitted top and some heels. Simple, but the addition of a hat will make it eye-catching.

It’s important to care for your felted hats – since they do get better with age, you want to be able to wear them and still get the most out of your purchase.  Hat boxes are great for storing your hats – and keeping them from getting dented or dusty.  I stuff mine with tissue to keep the shape, and I use enough tissue that it sits up off the brim.   If you don’t have a hatbox, you can pick up boxes for reams of paper (like at Office Depot) and set the hats in there side by side.   I try to make sure my hands are clean when handling the hat for storage, and since I get major hat hair when wearing a hat, I generally don’t put much goo in my ‘do – so as not to ruin the material with product.  Scotchguard isn’t a bad idea to treat hats so that they repel stains and water, and some people recommend cleaning the sweat band inside the hat with a mild soapy solution.   This site has recommendations for hat care, and they say to be careful when cleaning the sweat band, so that the soapy solution doesn’t discolor the hat.

If you want to see more hats I’m super fond of, you can view them here, via the Wishpot widget, or on my Wishpot, as I continue to add hats I love.  (I also <3 Wishpot!)

What do you think?  Are you into the hat craze?  Can we bring back the hat?!

Guest Blog Jess Estrada Favorite Fall Fashion Trends No comments yet

Hi Wishpot community!

I’m Jess, a 20-something young professional making things happen in the beautiful city of Seattle.

I started FreshJess.com last year to share with my friends all of the great events, articles and other interesting info I come across. Through my job and my general curiosity, I am exposed to a lot of fun things going on in Seattle; meaningful articles in business and philanthropy, and random cool things pertaining to fashion, music, design and life.

You’ll get a glimpse into my insatiable curiosity and open mind on FreshJess.com. I hope you enjoy reading it!

I am both honored and humbled to be a Wishpot fashion expert. I actually find fashion and trends to be really exhausting to keep up on – but style is an art form and finding your own will truly unlock your self-confidence. I pay attention to what’s hot in the fashion world but stay true to what works for me.

One of my absolute favorite things about fall is the resurgence of boots after months of sunny days and long nights in sandals. I love boots of all kinds: thigh-high, steampunk Victorian-style boots, ankle booties, studded boots, ones with straps and everything in between.

Here are a few of my favorites, which you can also view in my Wishpot “Beauty and the Boots” wishlist!

Guest Blog Snapshot Fashion - Tights, Tights, Tights! No comments yet

Greetings Wishpot readers!

I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Diane and I write for Snapshot Fashion, a blog that concentrates on the latest trends and styles going on around the world. I am happy to have recently become one of the newest Fashion Experts here on Wishpot.

There are a million trends going on this fall, from western boots to leather minis. But the one trend that never goes out of style and that I absolutely love to wear is TIGHTS. I already started wearing them this season…and actually went shopping for even more this afternoon. Wearing tights can add so much to an outfit. They really make a great accessory.

There are three types of tights that I feel everyone should own.

1)    Colorful and opaque- You can make any outfit more fun with a pop of color. If you don’t have a cool necklace or scarf to wear no worries. Use your legs as your accessory! Tights that are colorful and opaque are all you need to look stylish and amazing.

2)    Patterned- Now patterns can get a little wild. Keeping them simple would be best. A simple checkered pattern, houndstooth, or stripe will really go a long way. It will keep your outfit interesting without becoming too overwhelming.

3)    Lace or fishnet detailing- These are probably the most sophisticated and sexy. Never going out of style anytime soon they really add some va-va-voom to your look. I wouldn’t suggest pairing them with anything too short or revealing (you don’t want to come off looking skanky)…but wearing them with a pencil skirt and peep-toe pumps will keep it looking classy.

Not sure where you can find some fabulous hosiery? Snapshot Fashion suggests checking out some of our favorite and affordable stores: H&M, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, Brooklyn Industries, Topshop, and American Apparel.

Dries Van Noten 1 comment

Prints, colors and layering.

Dries Van Noten is considered an “eccentric” designer for his love of bold colors, even bolder prints and layering. He is noted for keeping an extremely low profile, strictly making ready to wear lines, not making haute couture and not advertising. The clothes he designs, speak for themselves.

Mr . Van Noten, displayed his new Spring 2010 collection at the Paris Fashion Week. It was utterly chic and flooded with ethnic prints. It is defintely one of my favorite collections from the Paris Fashion Week.

Here are some of my favorite looks from the Spring 2010 that I will be adding on my Dries Van Noten Wishlist once they hit the stores.

Dress Up Your Legs With…Jeggings?! No comments yet

Get ready for the latest fall fashion: “Jeggings”- a combination of leggings and jeans. Jeggings are made with a stretchy fabric that have the look of a form fitting skinny jean but won’t show every bump and curve on your body. Jeggings are much more comfortable then wearing the skin-tight skinny jeans. If you love leggings but want something a little more sophisticated, then Jeggings are the way to go!

All of these items can be found on my wishlist
