Ethical Mondays! Wedding Footwear

So I kinda got to wondering…

I’m fresh back (if fresh is the word!) from a hen weekend in the Peak District. A weekend of girly chat, cheerleading activities (I never thought I would but actually, it was hilarious!), clubbing at old uni haunts, good pub food and countryside walks.

As part of the general girlyness, I finally got around to watching the ‘Sex and the City’ film (I know, I know, I have failed half the global population with my tardy behaviour, I’m sorry) with the inevitable result that I kind of got to wondering about shoes, wedding shoes to be precise and ethical ones to boot (boom boom!).

So here’s my top ten pick of ethical wedding footwear for striding down that aisle in true catwalk style – and giving Ms Bradshaw (or should that be Mrs Big?) a totter for her money…

1. Beyond Skin

clip_image002

Biased I know, but I got my own sexy sparkly wedding shoes (pictured) from ethical and vegan shoe company, Beyond Skin, and I’ve worn them (to an accompaniment of compliments) on many an occasion since.

As well as making gorgeous shoes coveted by the likes of Natalie Portman, Beyond Skin’s philosophy is to ‘…trade in a manner that is non exploitative to humans, animals and wherever possible the wider environment. Using no animal products, all our footwear is hand-made to order in the UK promoting ethically-sound and less energy intensive working practices.’

The ready-to-wear range starts from around £100 and their bespoke service – for which you can choose from their luxury, recycled vintage fabric range – starts at £247.

2. Izzy Lane

Izzy Lane’s shoes are handmade in Britain and approved by the Vegetarian Society. These cream open toe sling backs would be perfect for summer and the chunky heel gives you that extra height but with a bit of support too. These are shoes you would wear again and again – no question!

Now in the sale at £161.00!

3. Terra Plana

clip_image006

This shiny shoe from ethical footwear company, Terra Plana uses recycled rubber and vegetable tanned leather which is a natural alternative to Chrome tanning. If you decide it’s too dark a shade for your wedding dress, it could be a great option for the bridesmaids.

From £90

4. Kitty Cooper

Just look at this sassy little pair of 1930s dove-blue satin shoes with 1950s fuchsia silk heels from Kitty Cooper! And not only do they look good but they’re hand made by a family business in East London and all the fabrics, ribbons and trims are truly vintage – from the 1920s to the 1970s.

Snap them up now! £115 in the sale – 50% off the usual price.

5. Bourgeois Boheme

For a bride on a tighter budget, Bourgeois Boheme – a veggie company whose motto is ‘fashion with compassion’ – has these strappy sandals with jewel detail for just £25.00 in the sale!

6. Hetty Rose

clip_image012

Wow! You could really make a statement with these fabulous Hetty Rose fabric shoes. Handmade with vintage fabrics – mainly vintage Japanese kimono fabrics – you can choose a pair you see on the Hetty Rose site, or get some made to order just for your wedding!

7. Stella McCartney

To go all ethical designer-tastic, try these sky high wedges from Madame McCartney. If your pocket will let you at £495!

8. Vegetarian Shoes

These cute kitten heels are just in at Vegetarian Shoes and are made from a synthetic Microfibre material used for yachting upholstery. It looks and feels like supple leather, but is ‘breathable’, unlike other plastics.

From £44.95

9. Thomas Murphy at Last

If you’re feeling flush, you might like to shell out for these Thomas Murphy handmade cream court shoes (with vegetable tan leather) from Last in Brighton. They’ll cost you a pretty penny at £474.99 but according to the blurb ‘…are designed to age like a fine wine and hand-made to last, revealing their unique character and vintage as the natural materials used to construct them are weathered by the changing seasons.’

10. FairDeal Trading

And finally, if you fancy something comfortable but unconventional, why not go for these Ethletic trainers in white or pink from FairDeal Trading?

The rubber sole is made with FSC-certified Rubber, a Fair Trade premium is paid to the rubber producers in Sri Lanka, and the shoes are produced under a Fair Trade agreement in Pakistan.

From £32.35

And that’s all for now… Until next week, happy aisle hopping!

  1. Katie sounds like you had a gal-orious weekend! If it makes you feel better I haven’t seen the “Sex in the….” movie YET either. But I’ve heard all about it. I haven’t actually seen The Sixth Sense…. shh don’t tell anyone….which doesn’t make me a very popular movie trivia partner. But as far as shoes go… Kity Cooper please. I love the vintage looks.
Thanks Katie for a great post
